Prompt #7: Educational Psychology, Chapter 15

Formative and summative assessments are discussed in Chapter 15.

An analogy of those has been posited as follows: summative assessments are like an autopsy, while formative assessments are like regular physicals done by a physician.

In relation to some hobby you have or work skill you possess, describe what a formative and a summative assessment for that skill might look like.

  1. So, I'll pretend I have a hobby, and I'll pretend it's something really spiffy...like quilting.

So, my hobby is quilting. The formative assessments for making a quilt would be to measure all the pieces that are going into it, and asking all the questions a seasoned quilter like myself would ask...Are they fitting together like they're supposed to? Do I need more fabric? Is it looking like I want it to? If no, why not? Are the seams holding? The summative assessment would be the quality of the final product.

  2. In my work I am reasonable for many databases that keep up with all sorts of student information. My formative assessment would be to create the database and then research and put together all of the information I need to enter. I would then enter the appropriate information into the database. My summative assessment is the final product after I have entered all of the information and emailed it or printed it for the appropriate persons who have requested it.

  3. One of my hobbies is sewing. I remember learning how hand stitch first before even learning how to use sewing machine and if we did not do it right our teacher would review it stitch very quickly and I had redo my work. So this would an example of formative assessment. Making a item like a dress would be summative assessment because you have to use all the skills that you learned in order to make the dress.

  4. My hobby is buying classic automobiles and restoring them to their original form or with slight modifications. Before I purchase a car, I do research (formative assessment) on how costly the parts will be and are the parts readily available and the final question (summative assessment) is the car worth the investment.

  5. One of my hobbies is making crafts. The formative assessment would be getting all the materials together and seeing if they would work together to make the craft. Like gluing a map to wooden letters but not sticking because the glue was not strong enough. The summative assessment would be the end of the project with the map sticking to the letters.

  6. The past year my life has taken a drastic turn. I went from being a single career gal to a wife and mother of an eight year old. So I would say that my hobby now is taking care of my family. The summative assessment would be the cleaning, cooking, and discipline. The formative assessment would be the end of the day family dinners discussing the highs and lows of the day and planning for the next day to begin.
